I guess technically it'd be of the opposite charge however,...not telling to add, well a player in this case. I'm not really certain what that would be considered. Anyway, I had a hunch last Friday about the Angels' Peter Bourjos destroying Baltimore pitching, was going to write about it.....then didn't. My apologies. I added him that very day in one of my leagues, but told no one. I mean in my defense, there really isn't anything overly exciting about a guy recording 3 two-hit games over 5, scoring three runs, with two RBI and a stolen base. Is it nice? Sure. Is it Blog-worthy? Nah. I'm sure you understand. I just had a hunch is all. He'd gone 2 for 3 with a stolen base the previous night vs. the Rangers, and I knew with the Orioles "pitching staff" coming to town for a weekend series, Bourjos could at least help my BA, score a few runs, and snag a couple of bases while he was at it. I could dump him Monday back to waivers and that would be that. He was owned in around 7% of leagues at that point, and I just needed a little outfield jump start for a few days. Uh.....yep, got that and then some. Bourjos feasted on the birds, and I mean like Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner rolled into one. This guy went at it! He recorded 3 hits in all three contests, went yard in all three, had 5 RBI, scored 5 runs and even got me that stolen base I was hoping for (enter written code laughter here...just no LOL's please, I hate it). Pebo looks to carry his harmonious tune into the Angels' continued homestand vs. the Chi-Sox tonight. I'd grab him up if I were you, he's currently owned in 42% of leagues. I have another hunch that, that percentage will continue its steady climb; leaving me with two words of advice. GET HIM. There, it has been said (twice in fact, including once in caps lock) and my conscious is clear.

Schmidt happens...

When it's mixed with Gold however, it changes everything. Arizona's Paul Goldshmidt is the latest member of the call-up crew to pose instant relevance on the fantasy scene. Through 47 AB on the season, the Diamondbacks' rookie first baseman has racked up 14 hits, good for a .298 BA. Overall, Goldy has 4 HR, 10 RBI and 8 runs scored thus far in his rookie campaign. He has gone yard in back-to-back games against the Phillies, including a monster mash off of lefty ace Cliff Lee. The D'backs have shown their confidence in Goldshmidt, plopping this kid into the lineup amid a west coast pennant race, and you should do the same. Translated, that's 2 Mariners worth a look. Mike Carp and Casper Wells are absolutely shredding right now for the Emerald State's pro ball club. Carp is currently in the midst of a 15 game hitting streak, swatting 3 home runs with 11 RBI in his last six contests. Wells has recorded multi-hit games in 3 of his last 4, going yard in his last three games, while recording 5 RBI and a stolen base during that span. Both have eligibility at OF, with Carp having the additional availability at 1B (his current defensive position). The latest lineup trend has Carp batting cleanup, with Wells following at the 5 hole as the DH. Carp is a Mariner product, taking advantage of his latest call-up, with Wells coming over from Detroit at the trade deadline. Both will collect a ton of at bats during the remaining stretch of the 2011 campaign, as they audition for the 2012 season. The fish and the ghost are currently available in 38% and 98% of leagues respectively, and are certainly worthy of roster consideration. Consider it.

Owners Needed

Here are a couple of guys that are available in most every league, and well shouldn't be. They deserve food, shelter, clothes and more importantly, a roster spot. Johnny Giavotella of the Royals is currently owned in a mere 4 % of leagues. Since his call up on August 5th from AAA Omaha, the 24 year old second baseman has been very productive through his first 10 games in KC. Giavotella is batting .289 through 38 AB, gone yard once, driven in 4, scored 5 times, and swiped an impressive 4 bags in 4 attempts. He has moved up to the 2 hole in the order, and his ability to get on base and into scoring position means his run production will stay steady. His BA and stolen base potential are also reason to pick up the latest farm produced Royal. Houston's J.D. Martinez is next on the list. Called up from AA Corpus Christi as a direct result of the Hunter Pence trade to Philly, Martinez has adjusted nicely to the Bigs. Through 56 AB, Martinez has homered 4 times, driven in 15 runs, and scored 8 himself. He's batting a modest .250, however the power potential and everday at bats for the 23 year old outfielder provide for a lofty ceiling with regard to upside. He's available in 85% of leagues. Get 'em!

Power!

Perhaps the real ultimate kind, minus the cheesy ninja-isms. Every eye in northeastern Ohio has been on Jason Kipnis since his call up on July 22nd. Playing second fiddle to only Dustin Ackley with regard to 2011's 2B prospect rankings, Kipnis has wasted little time making his presence felt in the Tribe's lineup. While leaving much to be desired over his first 6 games as a big leaguer, Kipnis has been dynamite over his past 8. Prior to Cleveland's showdown vs. the Royals on July 31st, Kipnis had recorded only 2 hits in 17 AB. Since then, JK-47 has been on an absolute tear, raising his average at the plate a total of .122 points to a respectable .240. Over that span, the Cleveland rookie is 10 for his last 33, including 5 homeruns (1/2 of his hits), 7 RBI and 8 runs scored. He's also stolen 2 bases, both coming in his past 3 games. The left handed batsman is currently the proud owner of a very savy .901 OPS (.862 OPS through 3 minor league seasons), and actually hits lefty pitching better than righties (.313 BA/.262 BA respectively, through 91 games at AAA Columbus). With the Indians currently in a battle for the A.L. Central Crown, look for the 24 year old to continue to contribute and thrive out of the 2 hole behind Michael Brantley, followed by Cabrera, Hafner and Santana at the 3, 4, and 5 spots.

Add 'em

Hideki Matsui and Rick Ankiel are two guys worth a look right now in every and all fantasy leagues. Godzilla is currently riding a 15 game hit streak for the A's, batting a ridiculous .483 over that stretch. He has homered twice in his last 3 outings, including one off of fellow lefty David Price yesterday in St. Pete. The 37 year old veteran is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon, and should be scooped up if he is still available in your league. His recent hot streak has shown his ownership rise dramatically. Matsui is currently available in 20% of leagues, and will likely be an untouchable soon. Grab him quick, as he will be a nice addition for your stretch run. Oakland's next 6 games feature 4 southpaw starters as the opposing pitcher, but fret not people, as Matsui is actually batting .20 points higher (2.81) on the season vs. lefties, opposed to righties (2.61). In addition, and from a power standpoint, 8 of his 11 homers this season have come against a left hander. Washington's Rick Ankiel is also a man currently on fire. Far easier to come by (owned in only 16 % of leagues), Rank is a guy who could give your lineup a boost right now. The Natties' leadoff man is batting .326 over his past 10 starts, including 4 homers, 11 RBI and 9 runs scored. Ankiel, a lefty as well, does receive the occasional day off against non-righties (.219 BA vs.), however will face only 1 this coming week, in the form of Cole Hamels on Friday at Philly.

I'm....Jesus Guzman?

"Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diago, which of course in German means"...well you know the rest. While Ron Burgundy was certainly way off with his version of the origin of San Diego, Jesus Guzman of the hometown Padres has been way on (just coined that phrase, hoping it will stick) with the bat of late, and deserves a look in every league. At 5'10, 190 lbs, Guzman isn't exactly built like the prototypical first baseman; probably more like a shortstop. Why mention shortstop? Well he's crazily eligible at both positions just mentioned. He might literally be the only player in history to qualify at such polar defensive stations. Anyway though, who's complaining? The more eligibility the better as we all know. In 88 official at bats on the season, J-Guz is hitting .341 with 4 HR, 22 RBI, 13 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. Over his past seven starts, Guzman has recorded 5 multi-hit performances, gone yard twice (both at Petco), and driven in 8 runs. He has also reached home plate safely 7 times himself, and swiped a bag against the D'backs on July 28th. The guy is filling 4 of the 5 categories nicely, and at the cleanup spot in the Padres lineup, look for that to continue. (He does have upside concering steals as well) Oh, one other thing worth mentioning......exactly 1/3 of Guzman's hits this season have come in the form of a double, contributing to his outstanding .614 SLG. He was 2 for 4 last night with a double and an RBI against Dodger's Ace Clayton Kershaw, and will face Kuroda and Lilly the next two nights, before traveling eastward to Pittsburgh for a weekend series against a soft Pirates pitching staff. The future is looking good for Mr. Guzman. Pick him up quick while he's still available. He's owned in only 34% of leagues, but his stock is on the rise and that number could jump exponentially over the next few days . Players coming, going, staying....it's been hectic as well as extremely entertaining. Now that the smoke has cleared, many things have become visible; namely, player roles. In some situations, voids were created and not filled entirely by incoming players. That's good news for bench players who now get a shot at regular starts. The above situation certainly describes that of the Houston Astros. With Michael Bourn and Hunter Pence sent packing to contenders (Atlanta and Philly respectively) Jason Bourgeois of the 'stros has found himself in a very nice position. While Jordan Schafer did come over from the Braves, there are TWO outfield positions that need filling in Houston. Remember, the void. Bourgeois will surely occupy one of the two spots in the Houston outfield for the remainder of the season. As it stands right now, Schafer isn't even eligible to come off of the DL for another 10 days or so with a fractured finger. The only relevancy with regard to Schafer's eventual return is that Bourgeois may move from his current CF spot, over to RF. That will have no bearing on his fantasy production, I assure you. JB has played all three OF positions at some point during the current season, starting for Carlos Lee in left field a total of 10 times, while spelling Bourne and Pence seven times each in CF and RF, again respectively. He's versatile and will be in the Houston line up on a daily basis from here on out, barring injury. He himself has been a visitor to the DL this season, but do not let that deter you from picking this guy up. When healthy, Bourgeois is absolutely one of the elite base stealers in all of the Bigs. Good news people, he's healthy! Moreover, he's available in 70% of leagues. That percentage will be shrinking on a daily basis, so act fast if you need steals. He has swiped 22 bags on the season, including 5 over his last 4 contests. What makes the hype surrounding Jibs even more credible, and incredible is the fact that he has only 127 AB on the season. To put that figure into perspective, the departed Micahel Bourn has 39 steals in 429 AB. Math time! If Bourgeois were given the same number of opportunities as his former teammate, he would on paper, have a ridiculous 74 steals. Ricky Henderson anyone?! Let's throw in some factors etc., translate that math into "real life", and say that JB would have easily recorded 50 steals by this point in the season. Even that may be too low of an estimate. The dude can seriously fly. He is currently sporting a .354 BA/.374 OBP on the season as well. Bottom line; Bourgeois gets on base a lot, and he's without a doubt going to run when he does. Pick him up!

Oakland?!

So, a week after bashing the A's offense amid my Jemile Weeks fantasy rant, I'm here to not only endorse another Oakland bat (2 to be exact), but to formally apologize for my sarcastic outburst directed at the Athletics' less than stellar line-up. Well, maybe not so much the second part, I do think they will return to their true form eventually; but for now......dinner is served, come get some! Nothing like missing out on a buffet. Cliff Pennington and Conor Jackson are available, and while it isn't fall or "autumn" (for the sophistacates) yet, these boys are raking. Available in 8% and 1% of leagues respectively, C & C are part of an offensive factory that have scored 50 runs over the past 7 games. Their competition? At the Bronx against the Yanks, then at home vs. the Rays. They've faced some solid pitching over the stretch and have pounded it. Look no further than James Shields, who gave up 10 ER over 4 IP on Wednesday. Cliff Pennington is currently riding a 12 game hit streak, which translated speaks to the fact that he's hit safely in every game since the All-Star break. Over that span he is batting .455, with 2 HR, 8 RBI and 9 runs scored. His partner in crime, Mr. Jackson, has hit safely in all but one game since the Mid-Summer Classic, registering a .353 BA, 2 HR, 11 RBI, and 8 runs scored. You can certainly find a bit more in the homerun department elsewhere, but look no further than these two gentlemen if you are in need of runs, ribbies, and BA......at least for the short term. Again, these are still the A's we're talking about.

Fantasy Fall

NFL. While mainly a bench player, Martinez has capitalized on the numerous injuries that have plagued the aging Philly offense this year. He certainly looks to have a bright future in PA, but for now his role is what it is. His latest gig has him at third, however with the return of Placido Polanco slated for this weekend, he will most likely find himself back on the bench at some point during the Phils' 3 game homestand against intrastate foe, Pittsburgh. You are going to get at least 5-6 starts from Martinez in the coming days guaranteed, and we all know that return target dates are never set in stone. Setbacks do occur quite often, so grab this guy, especially those of you in head to head weekly formats. The Maroon Platoon play seven straight this week at home; the final contest of a 4 game series vs. San Diego tonight, three games vs. the Giants, culminating with a trifecta against the Pirates as I mentioned earlier. Martinez has played a host of positions this year, making it quite easy to find roster space for him without having to do a whole lot of shifting around. He currently holds eligibility at 2B, 3B, SS, and OF. The Phillies' temporary starter at third base is currently riding a seven game hit streak, while homering twice, with 10 RBI, 5 runs scored and 3 stolen bases over that span. He's currently the second bat after J-Roll in a hot Phillies line-up. Utley, Howard and Victorino follow him, meaning rbi and runs are certainly on the menu. He's hot, so pick him up if you need help at any of the 4 positions (ridiculous) he's eligible at. Martinez is currenlty available in 82% of leagues.

Leading Off

Both Oakland's Jemile Weeks, and Pittsburgh's Alex Presley draw the first pitch each night from the opposing pitcher. Both guys are also call-ups, intended as temporary fillers for teammates headed to the DL (Mark Ellis and Jose Tabata respectively). In Weeks' case, Ellis has since returned....and upon that return, immediately headed straight for the dugout. The younger brother of Milwaukee's Rickie Weeks has impressed A's management to the extent that he has maintained his starting gig at second base. Don't look for that to change any time soon either (sorry Ellis owners...wait, there aren't any). In terms of fantasy, Jemile is a 3 category player. He's not built as a power guy, won't drive in many runs due to his place in the lineup (and the fact that he plays for Oakland), but will help your BA, steal bases and score an occasional run (again, a slam on the A's "offense"). He currently hosts a .354 OBP over 138 AB's, however has scored only 17 times....a testament to the above mentioned lackluster barrage of bats that follow him. He's doing his part though and can certainly help your team. Through 35 games, Weeks is batting .319 with 10 stolen bases. For what it's worth, he does have 11 RBI as well. Bottom line here; he gets on base, and that alone is a recipe for good things to follow. Alex Presley is taking advantage of his time in the Bigs as well, since his call-up on June 28th. His sample size is about half that of Weeks', but has been ultra impressive nonetheless and something that Buc's management think will continue. So do I. With Jose Tabata slated to return to LF within the next week or so, it's most likely not Presley's playing time that will take the hit (no pun intended). Fellow outfielders Matt Diaz and Garrett Jones have been anything but impressive with the bat, basically platooning depending on the arm they are facing. Jones (a lefty) can't hit them, thus giving way to the righty Diaz. Presley (also a lefty) can hit them, making him even more attractive as a potential everyday player for western Pennsylvania's baseball version of the black 'n yellow. Okay, so now that the situational table is set, how about some stats? On the season, Presley has 23 hits in 67 AB, computing as a very attractive .343 BA. Through 16 games, A.P. has scored 12 runs, stolen 4 bags and driven in 9, again from the lead off spot. He also has a home run on his resume, going yard the same day he was called up. These guys are well deserving of a look, and are currently owned in only 40% of leagues combined. There's that, grab 'em up.

Cisco Kid

No, not the author the "Thong Song"....not even spelled the same. I'm talking the starting right fielder for the baseball Giants. Nate Schierholtz not only has a cannon for an arm, but has flashed some explosiveness at the plate of late. That rhymed, but it was unintentional as the rap theme died after the first sentence. Back to baseball. Nate-Dogg (alright done for real this time) has been absolutely raking over his past 13 contests. Over that stretch, Schierholtz is batting .431 (22 for 51), and has recorded at least 1 hit in 11 of those mentioned. Six of the eleven have actually been multi-hit affairs, and in sticking with the theme, Schierholtz has 3 homeruns and 7 RBI over his most recent six contests. He's on fire, and has right field all to himself. Bruce Bochy won't be taking his arm out of play any time soon, meaning his bat won't be either. Nate is currently batting in the clean-up spot, with Sandoval and his .303 BA hitting third. With that said, look for the RBI chances to continue, and for Schierholtz to absolutely cash in. Scoop him up now as he's available in 75% of leagues.

The Pen

Full of bulls. If you find yourself in need of saves, the Dodgers' Javy Guerra is good for the running. He is currently owned in only 15% of leagues. Of the 18 saves recorded by Dodger relievers this season, Guerra has recorded 4 of them, including the last 3. His last came on July 10th, with his prior coming 2 days before, on the 8th. He is second on the team in saves to Broxton (7), followed by Padilla (3).....both of whom are currently on the DL. Neither has been reliable in the role when healthy, and there is no timetable set for either to return. With that said, look for Mattingly to keep Guerra in the top spot. Over 19 1/3 IP on the season, Javy is sporting a 2.33 ERA with 13 K's. His WHIP is underwhelming at 1.40, but compared with the above mentioned "competition" and the other 4 Dodger's with a save each to their credit, it's barely noticeable. In fact, the lowest WHIP of his 6 pen pals stands at 1.32. It is worth noting too that in Guerra's past 7 appearances (7 IP), he has struck out 6 batters, while walking only 2. He has also allowed only 1 ER over that span (not a save situation), and is 3 for 3 in save opportunities. Get him if you need him.

305

What do Miami and Emilio Bonifacio have in common? Well there is the obvious, he is a Marlin after all. It's real hot there, and life is real fast. Bonifacio is both of those things as well. He is currently riding an 11 game hit streak, inclusive of a .372 BA with 10 runs scored and 8 stolen bases. Why the posting of the area code? Other than the obvious, it being that of South Florida....it's three digits, starts with a three, and Bonifacio is the starting third baseman. Tired of hints and riddles yet? Stay with me, I'm about to tie it all together. The real jump here lies with the fact that E-Bon has eligibility at THREE positions. There it is! As fantasy enthusiasts, we all know how crucial that can be as we set our daily lineups. As mentioned, he has 3B on lock since the arrival of Jack McKeon as the interim skipper. He is also eligible as an outfielder, and shortstop. You will probably want to use him as one of the latter two, as we all know the hot corner is historically a power position (Emilio! only has 1 homer on the year). It's a bit of a down year however at third base, as we near the halfway point of the season. Jose Bautista (31) and Mark Reynolds (20) are the only two that have cleared the teens with regard to the long ball. Take away Adrian Beltre's 18 rockets, and the next highest bidder is Aramis Ramirez with 15. If your outfield is stacked, don't let his lone fan souvenir sway you from plugging him in at 3B. He's also obviously a viable option at SS, and could be less of an eye soar there. He offers speed, BA and with a current OBP of .348, he'll score plenty of runs with the likes of Hanley, Gaby Sanchez, Mike Stanton and Logan Morrison following him in the order (37, 48, 51, 42 RBI respectively). After a torrid Spring back in 2009 (anybody remember?), his second coming has arrived, and is indeed in perfect order to continue. If you want to snag him, you'd better make it quick. Five days ago, he was owned in 14% of leagues.....fastforward to today, and that number is sitting at 53%. His name may never make it to a verse of a Rick Ross tune, but it should to your roster. Get him!

Third Base help....

Need it? Minnesota's Danny Valencia may heed your call...if you pick him up that is. He is most likely hanging out in your free agent guest house as we speak, given that he's owned in under 30% of leagues. There is no one there that is hotter with the bat right now than Valencia. He has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games, including 5 multi-hit performances. Over that stretch, the Twins' third baseman has hit 3 homers, driven in 12 runs and crossed the plate 8 times himself. If you're interested in an even smaller sample size, over his past five games he has gone 11 for 20, Yard twice, driven in 8 and scored 5. Pretty good. On the year Valencia is batting just .240, but look for that to climb as he thrives in a rejuvinated Twins offense at the fifth spot. He also has 45 RBI on the year, which is great production with 4 games remaining before the All-Star break. He's on pace for a nice second half and is certainly offering more in the "Pop" department than some of his other housemates...Scott Rolen and Chase Headley, just to name a few. He may actually get an invite to the main house soon, as he currently ranks 10th among all MLB third basemen with regard to RBI.

Oh Canada....

You have no idea how difficult it was to type that, especially the day after our nation's birthday. It had to be done however, as I'm throwing a Toronto bat at you on this Tuesday morning. Eric Thames has arrived on the big league scene for the second time this season. After his May promotion to fill Adam Lind's roster spot, and "demotion" in early June, Thames is back. The Jays tried a bunch of combinations at third base, an experiment which proved unsuccessful. As a result, Jose Bautista was moved in from right field to provide his power, production and....okay this blog isn't about JB, we all know what he does....he tares covers off baseballs. Anyway, Right field was ripe for the picking, and Thames has taken advantage of his opportunity since his July 23rd call up. He has started in 9 of the 11 games since then (his 2 non-starts came @ St. Louis during Interleague play), and has recorded a hit in all nine. Over that span, ET has been been just that- extraterrestrial, batting .368 with 3 homeruns, 5 RBI and 9 runs scored. He's currently holding down the second spot in the order, preceeded by Rajai Davis, then followed by Bautista and Lind. That's pretty good company for RBI and runs scored oppurtunities. Interestingly enough, the Jay's line-up received another boost yesterday, as Travis Snider joined the big league line-up, pounding out 3 doubles at Fenway. I know, I know, this is about Thames, but Snider is worth a look too....power guy and available in 83% of leagues. Speaking of Snider, Thames has since moved over to left field to accompany his arrival in right. Toronto's outfield may seem a bit crowded, but as long as Thames' bat stays relatively consistent (and all signs point it will do much more than that), he will never feel any sort of reperucussion. Snider will spot start Davis in center on occasion, giving way to a Corey Patterson start in left, pushing Thames back to right. This fact, his versatility to play 2 of the 3 outfield spots, only enhance ET's value. Oh, and did I mention Juan Rivera was sent packing to AAA Vegas? Got a question, any history fans out there? If yes, you'll enjoy this....through 130 games in 2010 at AA New Hampshire, Thames hit 27 homeruns, and drove in 104 runs while maintaining a .288 BA. Through 53 contests this year at high A ball in Vegas, he batted .352 while producing a riduculous 1.033 OPS. Couple that with what he's currently doing, and you have incredible production for cheap. At this moment, he's owned in only 12% of leagues. Look for that percentage to increase exponentially over the coming weeks. Don't miss out!

Seattle Slew

Known for it's rain, coffee and Shawn Kemp...well at least the first two. While Kemp was a beast in his day, the sun has set on the Sonics, and has risen for the Mariners. It came in the form of Dustin Ackley on June 17th, the day he was called up from AAA Tacoma. Since then, he's done nothing but shine and then some. Through his first 12 games in the Bigs, Ackley is hitting .300, has homered twice, driven in 6 runs and scored 7 himself. He also has a stolen bag to his credit. He has hit safely in 10 games, and interestingly enough has reached safely in all 12. On June 23 and 24th Ackley went hitless in back to back games, however reached base 3 times via the walk, and actually scored 2 runs at the Marlins in the latter of the two contests. Bottom line, the kid gets on base. Over the course of 40 AB's, DA (the only relevant one) has struck out a mere 5 times. His plate discipline, ability to get on base, and HIT are not a flash in the pan either. Through 118 games at high A ball in Tacoma (2010-2011), Ackley averaged a .379 OBP, .463 SLG, .842 OPS. Since arriving in Seattle 40 AB's ago, his line is .378, .575, .953 respectively. It should be noted that the MLB average for the same 3 categories are as follows : .319, .390, .709. D-Ack is for real, and will be one of those top tier second basemen so highly sought after on draft day in the coming years. He is for real! He's available in 50% of leagues.....you know what to do.

Free-BIRD!

Well not exactly. More like Free-MAN....as in Atlanta's Freddie Freeman. If you have found yourself in need of a firstbaseman due to injuries (Pujols), interleague benchings (Billy Butler), or whatever the case may be, Fast...nah not even fast, just Freddie, may be a nice short term filler. He's a 21 year old rook with a ton of future upside, and will no doubt be relevant in terms of fantasy in the years to come. As for now, he's a free agent/waiver wire guy (available in 60% of leagues) who could give you some offense while you await the return of your mainstayers. He's batting .268 on the year with 9 homers and 32 RBI. He's on a bit of tear though recently, clubbing 2 long balls in his past 4 contests. Not impressed? Well, it is worth noting that both came at notoriously bad hitter's parks, or if you are a glass half-full kind of guy, good pitcher's parks. He hit a bomb at Petco on Friday, and last night, the lefty went yard off of fellow lefty Erik Bedard at Safeco Field. Not too shabby. If you need help, pick him up. As always, you could certainly do worse. If you couldn't, I wouldn't be writing about him. Happy trails!

Life is Beachy.....

In Atlanta? Well not really, it's a bit too inland for the sun and surf of the Atlantic. It surely is however within the confines of Turner Field. After missing 5 weeks with a trip to the DL, Brandon Beachy is back, healthy, and dominant. In his one start back from a strained oblique, Beebs struck out 11 Blue Jay batters over six innings, while walking only 2 and allowing 1 earned run. On the season, the youngster (he'll be 25 in September) has 57 K's through 50 innings of work, and is sporting an ERA and WHIP of 3.22 and 1.07 respectively. While his future as a permanent fixture in the Braves' rotation is as bright as ever, it is the present we as fantasy owners are interested in. That's equally as shiny as he looks to get his 3rd win tonight at the Mariners. Oh yes, I forgot to mention that his current record stands at 2-1. Ah, how looks can be so deceiving. His less than impressive record is due in part to some very poor run support. In 4 of Beachy's 6 starts in which he has earned a no decision, he went at least 6 innings, giving up no more than 2 runs, with a 10.08 K/9 over that span. Look for his overly capable offense to pick him up. You should do the same, as he's currently available in 33% of leagues.

Throw Some Dees...

Yep, like Daytons. Daytons are rims. Rims go on wheels. Wheels spin fast. Fast is what the Dodgers' Dee Gordon is.....REAL fast. L.A.'s most recent call up has had instant fantasy impact, especially on the basebaths. If you're looking for a short stop with 3 category contribution and incredible upside, go grab him. Since his arrival on June 6th, he's started 7 of 9 games and is batting .323 (including 4 multi-hit performances). He has scored 6 runs and swiped 3 bags, including third base once. Through 50 games at AAA Albuquerque, Gordon batted .315, crossed the plate 34 times and stole 22 bases. As the leadoff guy for Donny Baseball's boys in blue, look for this type of production to continue. He'll get on base a bunch and will score often with the likes of Ethier and Kemp looming behind him in the order. He's great with the leather too, only further solidifying himself as the everyday SS. He's available in 90% of leagues, but won't be forever.....don't miss out!

Rocky Mountain High

Tyme to pick up Mr. Wigginton. The Colorado utility guy has picked up a start at seemingly every position possible in an attempt to keep his bat in the line up. Time for you to do the same. With the demotion and release of Jose Lopez on Monday, and the struggles of Ian Stewart in A ball, thrid base is all his. He's currently batting .257 with 5 homers, 16 RBI and 17 runs scored through 42 contests. He's even swiped 3 bags.....3 more than all of last season in Baltimore. Ty was a surprise source of fantasy production last year with the O's and should maintain the course this year. Through 154 games in 2010, he belted 22 home runs and drove in 76 runs. In addition, he crossed the plate 63 times. His BA left a bit to be desired at .248, but you could certainly do worse. Anyway, it's his pop and ability to drive in runs that make him such an attractive addition. Throw in Coors Field as his home, and you have a recipe for substantial upside. He's available in 80% of leagues, so you shouldn't have any problem obtaining him. He currently has eligibility at 1b, 2b and 3b, only enhancing his value.

Gravity

We all know what it is. It's pretty darn vital, as without it, we'd all be floating around aimlessly. It's a friendly force for the most part, however in terms of fantasy sports, it can be quite a damning and violent phenomenon. Take for instance, Jaime Garcia's performance on May 28th at the Rocks. In his 10 previous starts, he hadn't given up more than 3 earned runs in any one outing. His ERA sat at an astounding 1.93 and life was good. Fast forward 3 1/3 innings, 11 earned runs later and life was not so good for the Card's ace (sorry Chris Carpenter). Not only did Tulo and friends show up, but on a bigger scale, so did gravity. Garcia came crashing back to earth after a ridiculous start to the 2011 season. Ouch. Panic ensued on the fantasy front, owners could be seen everywhere scurrying for cover. There were even momentary thoughts of selling high (no, not getting high....remember, Jaime not Jerry). It was utter mayhem! Anyway, fear not Garcians, your man has returned to form. He went 8 IP strong last night, scattering 4 hits, a walk, and 1 earned. He also fanned 8 small bears. Pretty good stuff. That's what big leagers do....they defy nature and all of its confining elements. Simply put, they bounce back. JG punched gravity right in the face last night. Well done Mr. Garcia, well done.

Jay-walking

Do people even get ticketed for this? I've heard rumors, but have never met an actual individual who has stumbled upon such misfortune. I fail to see how it is deemed a crime, and believe it to be a myth. Okay, so enough with the legal talk, although it was necessary in order to set the stage. Wait for it.....here we go. What might actually be a crime, is allowing the Card's Jon Jay to tread water in your league's free agent pool. He's no myth either, so throw him a float and snatch this guy up. He's real folks, and more importantly, really good! Although relevant in terms of fantasy already, Matt Holliday's departure to the DL only helps Jay's cause. Having started 11 of the last 12 games, and recording at least 1 hit in every start, look for him to continue raking as an everyday fixture in a dynamite line-up. On the season, Jay is batting .336 through 119 AB's. He's got 4 homers, 14 runs scored, 14 RBI and 4 steals over that span. Wow, that's a lot of 4's. What, want more of the number that falls between 3 and 5? Okay, he's only claimed in 48% of leagues, meaning he's ripe 4 the picking. Alright, enough. First, I'm tapping my left arm and calling on Erik Bedard from the M's. He's back folks. Yep, certifiably and his last five starts can attest to just that. Over that span, he has logged 33 innings of absolute brilliance. He has given up only 4 earned, walked a mere 7 batters, struck out 28 (including two 9 K outings), and has 3 wins. How long will he stay healthy? Not sure, but he IS right now, and that is good enough for me. He's owned in about half of the leagues, so check your wire and grab him if he's still available. Alright, so rewind.....back tothe dugout. Time for another walk to the elevated dirt pile that rests 60 feet, 6 inches from the plate. This time, I'm tippity tapping my right arm. Sit down Brian Wilson, you know you are already owned in every league. I'm looking at the dude next to you (sorry, his beard must have gotten in his eyes), Ryan Vogelsong. All this kid has done over his past four starts in a Giants uni is absolutely dominate. Over 26 1/3 innings, RyVo (I'm a giants fan so I can make up nicknames for my boys, and if you're not buying that, search"Poetic License") has given up 1 earned run......let me type that again... 1 EARNED RUN. He's K'd 19, given freely of first base to only 5 batters, and has 2 wins. Not bad for Barry Zito's "temporary" replacement. If he keeps this up, that "t" word may not be applicable, only more of an incentive to get this guy. He's owned in 58% of leagues and is on the rise. Better get em' both before they are out of stock.

If some is good....

Morse is better! The Natties' Michael Morse (my pre-season sleeper of the year), has finally landed an everyday position in D.C. With Adam LaRoche now on the shelf with a shoulder injury, Morse takes a few steps in from a crowded outfield, and takes over first base duties. After a tenacious spring, Morse was slow out of the gate to start the season. It was just a matter of time though, and a matter of circumstance before this guy got his chance to shine. Well folks, the sun is out. He's available in 98% of leagues, and will give you some bang for your...well, change, since you won't even have to dole out the green at this point. He is a power guy who will help your BA as well. He'll finish the season with 20+ round trippers (he hit 15 through 98 games in 2010). He has a mere 4 so far this season through 39 games, however the majority of those games have seen him appear in a pinch hit role with 1 AB per contest. He has gone deep in back to back games now as a starter, and is batting .282 on the season. Look for his average to hover between a very healthy .280 and .290 on the season. At present MM has OF eligibility only, however will add a 1B to his resume over the next few weeks, only increasing his value with daily line-up position flexibility.

Ludwick

Sounds very English. Like a brand of tea from across the Atlantic perhaps. Well, speaking of teas, or in this case tees, Ryan Ludwick of the Padres has been practically hitting off of one lately. Ryno has hit safely in his past 8 games, and over that span has raised his batting average a remarkable .53 points. He has 14 hits, 13 RBI, and as a product of a resurgent San Diego offense, has scored 6 runs. Need more....how about 4 home runs over that same span. While 3 have come away from Petco, he blasted a 2 run shot off of Yovani Gallardo in the 4th inning of Wednesday's home tilt vs. the Brewers. In 59 games as a Padre last season, following his trade from St. Louis, Ludwick hit 6 HR with 26 RBI. Through just 41 games this season, he has already outdone last season's totals by 2 in both respective categories. In addition, 4 of his 8 long balls this season have taken place at Petco "pitcher's" Park. Not too shabby. If you're in need of some outfield help, you can certainly do worse. Claiming him shouldn't be a problem either, as he is only owned in roughly 35% of leagues.

The uSS Help

Going with the boat theme here, as in staying afloat, and out at sea with the rest of your league. Going north of the border today with the 'jay's Yunel Escobar. Toronto's man in the middle has recorded a hit in 10 of his last 11 games, and is currently riding an 8 game hit streak. You'll want him for his batting average (.295 is very easy on the eyes), and as the lead off guy, his ability to score runs (24 on the season). He'll swipe the occasional bag, and has shown some pop with 3 long balls this season. Uh, oh and the batter friendly confines of the Rogers Center or Centre (sorry, I refuse to put the "r" before the "e") certainly doesn't hurt in that department, as he'll certainly reach the double digit mark by season's end. I do, it's my blog, I can say whatever I want. No but really, it's over. The Tiger's lead-off man has 12 hits over his last 7 games, flashed some power with 2 home runs, 8 RBI and swiped 2 bags. His batting average sits at .230, but has risen nearly .30 over the past week. His plate discipline needs to improve, which it will, and by summer his average will reflect that of a lead off guy. Don't miss out on the chance to snatch him from the free agent pool right now. He's available in 55% of leagues but won't be for long. He'll be owned in every league by mid-June. Tiger management believed in him when they got him as part of the Granderson trade. Time for you to believe in him too. Power, speed and a whole lot of runs scored await his owners. Need I remind you the bats that await his presence on the basepaths? Nah, you know. Go get him!

Pick em' Up!

Hellooooo...fantasy junkies. Welcome to today's most eligible free agent. I don't know if he enjoys long walks on the beach, but I do know 2 things about Andres Torres of the San Francisco Giants. He's healthy again, and has rightfully reclaimed his starting role as the everday starter in center field. He's 7 for 14 at the plate in 4 games back from an achiles injury that is as far behind him as the Giants irrelevancy in the NL West. He's fast, reeeal fast, and carries a pretty big bat too for a steals/runs/average guy. That's right, he'll contribute to 4 out of the 5 relevent categories. Ooops, I just caught myself in a lie. Don't hold it against me, I CAN be trusted. He's actually a 5 category player. Last year's stat line goes something like this: through 139 games (would have been more had it not been for the early season outfield shuffle) he batted .268, hit 16 homers, the majority from the left side into McCovey Cove. Ah forgot to mention, he's a switch hitter meaning he'll be in the lineup even against the Clayton Kershaws of the world. He knocked in 63 runs, scored 84 of them himself and swiped 26 bags. He's available in 65% of leagues, so what are you still doing reading this, go pick him up. He'll be untouchable soon. Until next time....
